How to Refluff a Comforter

Updated: Oct 10, 2018

A soft, thick down comforter can be a pleasure on cold winter nights, but a deflated, lumpy comforter doesn't have the same effect. Much of the fluff and thickness of down is provided by air between the feathers, and lying or sitting on the comforter squeezes that air out. Even your unconscious movements as you sleep can contribute to lumps and loss of volume. If you make fluffing the comforter part of your daily routine, you can avoid more time-consuming measures.

1

Straighten the comforter over the bed after you get up in the morning. Stand at the foot of the bed, and grasp the end of the comforter. Lift it to head height, then vigorously pull it downward, sending a ripple through the comforter and introducing air into the down. Repeat this several times each morning.

2

Press any lumpy sections of down with the heel of your hand to redistribute the feathers more evenly. By spreading the down throughout the comforter shell, you ensure all parts of the comforter are equally fluffy.

3

Hang the comforter on an outdoor clothes line for several hours on a breezy day. This helps introduce air back into the down.

4

Put the comforter in a large commercial dryer if none of these methods restores the comforter's fluff sufficiently. Set the dryer on the air fluff setting, which doesn't use heat. Put a few tennis balls inside white socks, and add them to the dryer. The tennis balls help break up clusters of down, and the socks prevent the balls from transferring any color or dirt to the comforter.

5

Air-fluff the comforter in the dryer for several hours or as long as necessary. Remove the comforter every 20 minutes and shake it. When it is fluffy enough, return it to the bed.

Things You Will Need

  • Tennis balls

  • White socks

Tip

  • If you fluff your comforter every day and avoid sitting or lying on top of it, you shouldn't have to fluff it in a dryer often, if ever.

Warning

  • Don't add dryer sheets or fabric softener to the dryer, as they can leave residue on the down.
